Broadband Roundtable

On June 13, 2007, Governor Kaine announced the formation of a “Broadband Roundtable” to accelerate the attainment of his economic strategic goal of having affordable broadband connectivity to every business in the Commonwealth by 2010. The Broadband Roundtable is charged with delivering a “blueprint” to assist communities with broadband planning and deployment. Roundtable members include local, national, and international leaders with a strong track record of innovating in the telecommunications industry.

The “blueprint” will focus on areas critical to the delivery of low-cost, last-mile service:

1. Broadband Adoption Measurement: Surface innovative models to measure adoption and offer target areas for investment
2. Technology Blueprint: Identify existing and emerging technologies (wired and wireless) that are suitable for delivering affordable services across the Commonwealth.
3. Innovative Applications: Highlight broadband dependent applications including telework, telemedicine, distance learning, public safety interoperability and social empowerment.
4. Business Models: Develop community oriented models to finance deployment and provide long-term sustainability with a specific emphasis on ensuring access to all Virginia businesses.
5. Community Outreach: Coordinate outreach strategies to encourage business and resident adoption.

The Roundtable will commence in July, 2007 and conduct meetings throughout the year culminating in a report to the Governor by July, 2008. All recommendations formulated by the Roundtable will adhere to the principles of long-term sustainability, public-private partnership, and community-driven strategy.
