Evaluate Grant Opportunities

Financing a broadband deployment can be a challenging endeavour.  The Federal Government is by far the largest source of funding for broadband related initiatives.  Communities must coordinate deployment activities and funding resources in order to maximize coverage and reduce capital outlay.

DHCD’s Virginia Rural Broadband Planning Initiative is a comprehensive telecommunications planning effort that will allow communities to identify and develop all elements necessary to create a successful community broadband network. Funds are distributed to eligible communities on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Federal Communications Commission

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) oversee programs that provide funding for broadband deployment in rural areas. The USDA provides low-interest l oans that may be used to build new and modernize existing telecommunications networks in rural areas, and the FCC's Schools and Libraries Universal Service Program and Rural Health Care Support Program provide financial support for broadband services to schools, libraries, and rural health care providers.

USDA Rural Development provides many programs for financing rural America’s telecommunications infrastructure.

USAC (Universal Service Funds)

The Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) is an independent, not-for-profit corporation designated as the administrator of the federal Universal Service Fund by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). USAC administers Universal Service Fund (USF) programs for high cost companies serving rural areas, low-income consumers, rural health care providers, and schools and libraries. The Universal Service Fund helps provide communities across the country with affordable telecommunications services.
